Color Spotting in Mexico 🇲🇽
This week’s color: PINK 🩷
Clockwise from top left:
1. Celestún Biosphere Reserve: Thousands of wild pink flamingos can be seen in and around the Celestún Biosphere Reserve, on the Yucatán coast about 95 km west of Mérida.
2. Chichén Itzá: One of Mexico’s most impressive ancient Maya cities, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is particularly beautiful in the warm pink and golden light of sunset.
3. Frida Kahlo: The famous Mexican painter spent much of her life in Mexico City’s Coyoacán neighbourhood. Her home, the colourful Casa Azul, is today a museum dedicated to her life and art.
4. Santa Prisca Church, Taxco: Set on a steep hillside, Taxco is known for its cobbled streets, colonial architecture and silver tradition. Its spectacular Santa Prisca Church dominates the historic centre.
5. Lucha libre: Mexico’s famously flamboyant version of professional wrestling is a spectacle of colourful masks, larger-than-life personalities, acrobatics and, of course, a whole lot of spandex…
6. Las Coloradas: These extraordinary pink lagoons on the Yucatán Peninsula owe their colour to microorganisms thriving in the highly saline water. The Maya were already producing salt in this region centuries ago.
7. Luis Barragán House: Luis Barragán (1902–1988) gave Mexican Modernism a unique identity, famous for bold colours, natural light and his striking use of Rosa Mexicano.
8. San Cristóbal de las Casas: Set in the Chiapas highlands, this atmospheric colonial town is surrounded by Indigenous Tzotzil Maya communities whose languages, traditions and customs remain an important part of the region’s identity.

Sacred to the Maya and shaped by nature over thousands of years, cenotes are among the Yucatán Peninsula’s most extraordinary natural wonders.
These crystal-clear freshwater pools form within the region’s porous limestone and can be open, semi-open or completely enclosed inside caves. For the Maya, they were vital sources of water and were also believed to be gateways to Xibalba, the underworld.
Today, cenotes offer a refreshing and fascinating addition to any Mexico itinerary. Swipe to discover more.

Not many people have heard of the Dolores Olmedo Museum in Mexico City, yet you may be surprised to hear that it holds the world’s largest collection of paintings by Frida Kahlo, as well as 148 works by Diego Rivera. The museum is also known for its breathtaking gardens and its inhabitants: the iconic Mexican hairless Xoloitzcuintli dogs and elegant peacocks. The museum is set to reopen on 30 May after closing during the COVID pandemic and undergoing a restoration, modernization, and cataloguing project.
The descent of Kukulkán at Chichén Itzá occurs every equinox (March 20–21 and September 22–23), when sunlight creates a unique spectacle in which a serpent appears to slither down the pyramid of El Castillo, reflecting the astonishing astronomical precision of the Maya civilization.

“Ofrenda” in our Mexico office 💀🌼 During Día de Muertos, it is tradition to build an altar or “ofrenda” (offering) to honor loved ones who have died. Every ofrenda includes the four elements: water, wind, earth and fire. Water is left in a pitcher so the spirits can quench their thirst. Papel picado, or traditional paper banners, represent the wind. Earth is represented by food, especially bread. Candles are often left in the form of a cross to represent the cardinal directions, so the spirits can find their way.

How turtle-watching tours actually help conservation
Seven species of sea turtles can be found in every ocean around the world. From the seven species - Green Turtle, Hawksbill, Loggerhead, Olive Ridley, Kemp's Ridley, and Flatback - six are threatened or endangered. A good way to help turtle conservation efforts is to go turtle watching, which helps fund monitoring and patrols.
A visit to Costa Rica between March and November coincides with turtle nesting and hatching season. Known as the ‘arribada’ (arrival), thousands of sea turtles emerge from the ocean and lay eggs on Costa Rica’s beaches. Whilst this takes place along much of Costa Rica’s coast, for reliable sightings we particularly recommend the protected reserves of Tortuguero on the northern Caribbean coast, and Ostional beach, near Nosara on the Pacific Coast.
Condor Verde will be happy to include a turtle-watching tour in your Costa Rica itinerary.
The Mexican taco stand that got a Michelin star
On May 14, the first-ever Michelin Guide to Mexico was revealed. In all, 157 restaurants were included in the guide. Famous Mexico City eateries Pujol and Quintonil were both awarded two Michelin stars. 16 restaurants were awarded one Michelin star, including Tacos El Califa de Leon, an unassuming 3-metre by 3-metre taqueria in the San Rafael neighbourhood of Mexico City. The essence of its taco is beef fillet so tender it need not be sliced into pieces. It is simply seasoned with salt and cooked with a squeeze of lime on a sizzling grill, before being wrapped in a fresh tortilla and served with green or red salsa.
Condor Verde will be happy to include a meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant in your Mexico itinerary.
Day of the Dead festivities in Guatemala
We all know and love Mexico's colourful Dia de Muertos, but did you know that Guatemala has wonderful festivities as well?
Barriletes Gigantes: With gigantic kites, the towns of Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepequez - located 30 minutes from Antigua - celebrate All Saints Day on November 1st. It is believed that the higher the kites fly, the better their messages will reach the dead.
Skach Koyl: The Mayan villagers of Todos Santos Cuchumatan - located 4h 30min north of Lake Atitlan - celebrate All Saints Day on November 1st with the Skach Koyl horse race. The riders, after drinking copious amounts of Quetzalteca liquor, race from one end of the village to the other, until the last man standing - or in this case, sitting on a horse - wins.
Condor Verde will be happy to include these festivities in your Guatemala itinerary.
By helicopter over Angel Falls, the highest waterfall on earth
At 979m, Angel Falls is the highest waterfall in the world, plummeting from atop the giant Auyantepuy tabletop mountain into the Devil's Canyon. Called Kerepakupai Meru in the Pemon indian language, Angel Falls acquired its name when American bush pilot Jimmie Angel crash-landed his four-seater airplane atop Auyantepuy in 1937.
The base of Angel Falls can be reached by boat, with an overnight in hammocks near the base of the falls. But a unique way to see Angel Falls is with an overflight by helicopter.
Condor Verde will be happy to include Angel Falls and a stay at the luxurious Waka Wena Lodge in your "luxurious adventure” itinerary.

Happy New Year from Condor Verde!
Four holiday traditions that you’ve probably never heard of!
Number 4
Costa Rica: Horses!
The spectacular "El Tope Nacional" horse parade, taking place on December 26th, is one of the most loved Costa Rican Christmas traditions. More than 3000 skilled horsemen and horsewomen from around the country ride their horses through downtown San Jose, showing off both their steeds and their riding skills. Marching bands and hand-painted ox carts created by local craftsmen also join in the fun, and plenty of food and drinks are guaranteed.
Four holiday traditions that you’ve probably never heard of!
Number 3
Guatemala: Burn the devil
The official kick-off to Guatemala's Christmas season is the "Quema del Diablo". Every December 7th at 6:00 pm sharp, Guatemalans “burn the devil,” building bonfires outside their homes to mark the occasion. Families come together after the burning to eat buñuelos, traditional donuts, and drink warm fruit punch. The origins of this Christmas tradition can be traced to colonial times, when figures of the devil were burned to celebrate the triumph of good over evil. The devil piñatas are a more recent addition...
Four holiday tradition that you’ve probably never heard of!
Number 2
Mexico: Radishes?!
December 23rd is "Noche de los Rabanos" (Night of the Radishes) in Oaxaca, a Christmastime festival dating back to 1897 that has no match in oddity and creativity anywhere else in Mexico. Wild animals, the Virgin of Guadalupe, mythical creatures and scenes of everyday Oaxacan life are all represented in shades of magenta and cream in the form of local radishes grown solely for the occasion. It’s a comical, whimsical and edible time.
Four holiday traditions that you’ve probably never heard of!
Number 1
Venezuela: Roller skating to church
Nobody knows how the "Patinata Navideña", dating back to the 1950s, started (alternative to ice skating?). But what's for sure is that this Christmas tradition is great fun: All-night roller skating ends with everyone skating to Mass at dawn. A bit forgotten in the last few turbulent years, the Patinata Navideña is making a comeback, with streets being closed off to ensure safe roller skating, as well as biking, scootering, skateboarding, and anything with wheels, really.
Between November and March, in the fir-forested hills between Mexico City and Morelia, you can witness the amazing migration of the monarch butterfly.

Cempasúchil, also known as "flower of the dead," was first described by Fray Bernardino de Sahagún (1499–1590), a Franciscan missionary who arrived in Mexico in 1529. The name of this flower comes from the Náhuatl "Cempohualxochitl," which translates to "20 flowers" or "many flowers".
The Mexican or Aztec marigold was commonly used in both traditional medicine and in funerary rituals as a tomb decoration since it was thought that its yellow and orange petals were able to keep the heat of the sun and shelter the dead.
Who knows the name of the prominent flower for the Day of the Dead celebration?
This Christmas or New Year go on a 6-day hike to the top of Mount Roraima in Venezuela. Jaw-dropping Mount Roraima is nearly two billion years old and one of the oldest geological formations on earth (Mount Everest in comparison is “only” 60 million years old).

6. Mexico City, Mexico

The Hach Winik, or Lacandon Maya, number around 800 and live in Mexico's Lacandon jungle on the border with Guatemala. They are the only Maya people who were never conquered by the Spanish. They lived in the last free Maya strongholds near Tikal, and when the region finally fell to colonial armies, some chose to retreat into this rich tropical jungle, well supplied with water, fish, game, and fertile soil. Today, the Hach Winik still maintain ancient practices, such as cultivating dozens of crops at the same time. They are notoriously healthy and many live past 100. We will visit the community of Lacanja Chansayab, near the ruins of Bonampak. A Hach Winik guide will take us through the jungle and point out the incredible diversity of medicinal plants and forest animals.
The highest concentration of lightning on earth can be found where Lake Maracaibo meets the Catatumbo River. About 260 days a year, no-rain lightning storms light up the sky all night long - thirty flashes a minute for up to nine hours, to be exact. Sailors have embraced this unexplained phenomenon for centuries, using the Catatumbo lightning as a beacon.
